I stumbled across Larry Sultan photos at SFMOMA some years ago and was startled and amused. "The Valley," his pictures of a porno shoot in a big suburban house in the San Fernando Valley near his parents' home is some weird kind of masterpiece.
Spoiler alert: the Friday Mahler performance with Blomstedt was disastrous. He was not capable of keeping himself upright - part way through the third movement, the performance was halted so he could be transferred to a straight backed chair, during which he cried out in pain. He seemed to have great difficulty even in turning the pages of the score, and in holding his head upright. Lots of head cuing going on by section chairs. It was a miserable thing to witness.
Well - I had asked SFS some questions and they just shared a press release with me. Blomstedt is withdrawing and David Robertson will be conducting the balance of the performances.
Blomstedt conducted very little Mahler when he was music director, so I am particularly interested in hearing his approach, after the different approaches of MTT and Salonen.
